Second time watching Secretary and I was able to appreciate it a lot more this time by taking it less seriously. While the film has some big important points to make about using kink intentionally to battle mental illness and self-harm, it does so through a lens of a relationship that isn’t nearly as consensual or negotiated as it should be. It’s a fun watch (other than the self-harm stuff which is very upsetting at points) and while its depiction of kink is imperfect, it’s a hell of a lot better than 50 Shades.
