All That Jazz

1979

i have known for a while that i need to think a lot more about death and i’m thoroughly grateful to this movie for giving me 123 minutes with which to do so. like Joe’s premature ejaculation onstage, death always comes too soon. it always humiliates us. we cannot avoid it, nor should we try.

whether or not the 5 stages of grief are bullshit or not, using them as a controlling metaphor to have this conversation works beautifully. and the masterpiece dance number feels as impressive today as it ever must have.

this is a perfect film to me.
